Almost a third of plastic-based medical devices are made from PVC. PVC compounds are chemically stable, easy to sterilise and usable inside the body. They are used to create flexible containers for blood, urine and ostomy products, as well as tubing for blood transfusion, catheters, heart-lung bypass sets and haemodialysis sets. PVC (without plasticiser) is also used to produce blister packages, offering structural rigidity and physical protection for different forms of pharmaceutical dosage.
